Once the military dogs are done with their duty, the dogs will retire. The reunion of a dog and his (or her) former handler is a very emotional moment. Flying home back to America, a dog can be adopted by anyone who has served with the animal. Going home to familiar faces means the four legged soldier will be comfortable in their environment.
When it comes to adoption, the military handlers who have worked with the animals get an opportunity to adopt first. This is followed by other individuals who may not know the dog, but open their homes for the canine. Typically, 90% of all four legged soldiers are adopted by their previous handlers and live happily around the United States.
